Hiking and Backpacking the Wind River Mountains and the Greater Yellowstone Region
Backpackers who have seen Wyoming's famous backcountry sights insist that the Wind River Mountains have better scenery and hiking opportunities than Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. The 100-mile long Wind River Mountain range form the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains in western Wyoming. These rugged and scenic mountains contain four wilderness areas and over 2,900 lakes and ponds. Wyoming’s highest mountain, Gannett Peak, is in this mountain range. Favorite destinations include Gannett Peak, Cirque of the Towers, Green River Lakes, Square Top Mountain and Photographer's Point. The busiest west side trailhead is at Elkhart Park near Pinedale. Hike 15 miles to Island Lake, and then explore the lake-studded Titcomb Basin. If you still have the energy, climb Fremont Peak, Wyoming's third highest at 13,745 feet. Map: Northern Wind River Range.
The main trail through the Wind River Range is the Fremont Trail, originally called the Highline Trail, a name it came by honestly, since it hovers around 10,000 feet. Our loop joins this trail (Number 094 on the Forest Service visitor's map) for 17 miles of spectacular walking almost wholly above 10,000 feet. But if you have the time and can manage the logistics, the hike from Green River Lakes to Big Sandy Campground stays above 9,500 feet for 75 miles. (Be sure to detour to the famous Cirque of the Towers, a semicircle of thrusting precipices equally renowned among rock climbers and photographers) The crest of the Continental Divide is composed of towering mountains from 12,000-13,000 feet high, with over 35 named peaks over 13,000 feet that attract climbers and backpackers from around the world. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail traverses the Wind River Mountains. As rich as the wind River range is it is not the only wonderful backpacking in the Pinedale/Sublet county region, The Gros Ventre Mountains to the north and the Wyoming Range to the west also provide enough backcountry to keep an avid outdoorsman exploring for a lifetime. Pinedale Wyoming is a backpackers dream.
