During a spina bifida corrective procedure at twenty-one weeks in utero, Samuel thrusts his tiny hand out of the surgical opening of his mother's uterus. As the doctor lifts his hand, Samuel reacts to the touch and squeezes the doctor's finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shakes the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. At that moment, I took this "Fetal Hand Grasp" photo.As a photojournalist, my job is to tell stories through pictures. The experience of taking this photograph has had a profound effect on me, and I'm proud to share this moment with you.
As a veteran photojournalist in Nashville, Tennessee, I was hired by USA Today newspaper to photograph a spina bifida corrective surgical procedure. It was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus in utero at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in utero was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. The worst possible outcome would be that the surgery would cause premature delivery, and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived.
The tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began. A typical C-section incision was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mother's thighs. The entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. During the procedure, the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently manipulating the outside of the uterus. The entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in 1 hour and thirteen minutes. Blue Dog Democrats Heath Shuler of North Carolina and Walt Minnick of my state of Idaho have been metaphorically neutered by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and now like all blue dog Democrats are obediently lining up behind Nancy Pelosi with their tails tucked between their legs to turn America into a socialist, welfare, nanny state.
It is unfortunate and surprising that a quarterback like Heath Shuler would become a liberal pawn as most quarterbacks that go into politics become conservative republicans like J.C. Watts, Lynn Swan, and the late, great Jack Kemp. It is surprising to me because it has been my observation that “Conservative are from Mars, Liberals are from Venus.” And they rarely line up with the metro sexual types on issues.-------------------------------> more
As great as the “Tea Party” metaphor is for tying our colorful history to current events the tea party has been misrepresented as a tax protest instead of a spending protest and this doesn’t present our concerns accurately. Even Sean Hannity has been calling the Tea Parties tax “protests” when it really is so much more.
On 4-15-2009 I attended two tea parties one in Jackson Hole Wyoming, the other in Idaho Falls, Idaho. These events covered the gamut of our discontent, but I don't think it serves us well to be pigeonholed by the liberal press into a complaint that appears to be limited to April 15, this makes us appear egocentric and shallow instead people that are deeply concerned for our progeny and the bankrupt country they are likely to inherit.
In 2000 I was really ticked off when Clinton increased the annual budget from $1.8 trillion too $2 trillion dollars, a $200 billion increase in one year in a time of prosperity. Silly me, I thought that the Clinton/Gingrich budget surplus should pay down the $5.7 trillion national debt. Now nine years later Obama sells his $3.6 trillion budget to his sycophant congress and these spendthrifts make Clinton look like a thrifty.

Today's partisan politics
begs the question, who's side are they on anyway? and regardless of which
party the answer spoken in deeds not words are always the side of their
party, and America is becoming the victim of their divisive ways.
I

after I came to live here I found out that Utah isn’t the only place
that is fifty percent Mormon.
As a compulsively inquisitive geo-political junkie I
decided to look through the Book of Mormon so I could learn a little
about the belief of my neighbors. As with any outsider looking into
another’s faith, I found many outlandish passages that would require
faith to swallow, however, this is a characteristic that all religions
share. What I have learned of my Mormon neighbors in the years since
my voyeuristic venture into the sacred book of the LDS Church is more
telling. My anecdotal experiences have revealed to me that I couldn’t

Early Islamism
The roots of militant Islam go back to the thirteenth
century; to a traditionalist legal philosopher named Ibn Taymiya, who
opposed Islam's incorporation of western influences. The most successful
militant Islamic movement, which drew its inspiration from Ibn Taymiya
is the Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam. Ibn Abd al-Wahhab,
a fundamentalist sheikh who preached religious reform, forged an alliance
with a local village chief, Muhammad Ibn Saud, to overturn un-Islamic
practices that had become prevalent among the Arabia's people. As with
his ideological ancestor Ibn Taymiya, Ibn Wahhab fought Muslim rulers
who he believed failed to implement a pure form of Islam. Between 1773
and 1819, the Saudis and the Wahhabis united to conquer the Arabian

As a well informed political wonk and
news junkie the only argument George Bush had to present
to me for war with Iraq was the well documented fact
that Saddam Hussein was giving the parents of Palaniastian
suicide bombers (terrorists) $25,000. This inducement
for Palestinian parents to sell their children on the
idea of an early death was a good investment for terrorist
supporter Saddam Hussein to stir the pot further fomenting
the Palestinian/ Israeli conflict that is the burr under
the saddle of every Muslim alive. This animus by design
6 out of 10 Americans are against President
Bush's request for the 86 billion dollar investment that we to
need make in Iraq and Afghanistan so these hotbeds of terror won't
remain terrorist incubators that blame their home grown failure
on the shining city on the hill.
The unreasonable among us believe we should
reach consensus with an unreasonable, contentious and self-serving world
via the United Nations. They want us to subordinate our autonomous right
of decisive self-protection to those that sell weaponry to our enemy,
these well meaning but ignorant folk think that this is a prudent path
to self-protection.
It's a dog eat
dog world and under the thin veneer of civility western society has
cultivated during the last few centuries our human/animal nature under
the surface remains as historically brutal as it has been since the
beginning of time. The bold dominate, the meek subordinate, i.e. Hitler,
Stalin, Mao, Poll Pot. Those that bend over accept a submissive position.
Those that accept a submissive position reap the rewards of their fear,
apathy and inaction.
My enemy is your enemy
therefore you are my friend. That is why we allied with Stalin our
ideological enemy in 1939 and gave him billions of dollars of munitions
during WW2. Hitler partnered with the Japanese not because he included
Asians in his master race concept or because they shared the same worldview;
he worked with them despite his ideology because they were the enemy
of the United States therefore his friend.
John Adams, Aaron Burr, Benjamin
Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George
Washington created a dynamic that fosters the greatest engine for peace
and prosperity that has ever existed, the Constitution of the United
States of America. Lesser men with the noblest of intentions are destroying
it.
Several years ago
observation provided an epiphany that testosterone may be a factor
of political ideological persuasion; later Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
put forth his oversimplified hyperbolic “girly-men” comment about
the California Legislature apparently coming to a similar hypothesis. Anthropology
is the study of humanity..............
If it weren't for the fact
of scarcity, there'd be no economic issues. Scarcity simply means we
all want more of something, but there are not enough resources on Earth
to satisfy every want. That means we must find a way to determine who
is going to get what's available.
As
a news junkie, political wonk, and patriot I have been amazed and outraged
at the indiscretion, thoughtlessness or stupidity that our reporters
have been exhibiting in their questioning of our policy makers and
tacticians conducting our war on terror.
